Accruals that survive the findings memo

18 June 2026

Accruals attract attention because they sit between judgement and evidence. Round numbers without a calculation sheet are easy to challenge — even when the economic need for an accrual is real.

Build the sheet before the sample arrives

For each material accrual, keep the calculation method, inputs, and owner on one page. Link to invoices, timesheets, carrier quotes, or historical run-rates. If the method changed from last quarter, write why.

Separate known invoices from estimates

Items with a supplier invoice in hand but not yet posted are not the same as pure estimates. Label them differently so reviewers and auditors do not treat every line as soft.

Revisit after clearance week

Some accruals clear quickly once invoices arrive. Note which ones reversed in the first ten days of the next period; that history improves next quarter’s estimate and shortens readiness questions.

If accruals are your main worry this quarter, mention them in the engagement enquiry so sample time lands there first.
